Grygera prepared for six-month Fulham absence

Fulham FC defender Zdeněk Grygera faces a long lay-off with cruciate damage, with his club announcing: "The recovery period for an injury of this nature is approximately six months."

Fulham FC have announced that defender Zdeněk Grygera is likely to be out of action for six months after damaging an anterior cruciate ligament.

The former AC Sparta Praha and AFC Ajax player, who joined Fulham from Juventus in the summer, was taken off midway through his side's 3-1 home defeat by fellow UEFA Europa League contenders Tottenham Hotspur FC on Sunday. The west London club said: "It is estimated that the recovery period for an injury of this nature is approximately six months."

The 31-year-old former Czech international has featured once in his team's group stage campaign and five times in the Premier League. Fulham lie second in Group K and will be certain of progressing to the round of 32 if they win away to section leaders FC Twente on matchday 5. - http://www.uefa.com

Visual identity for 2012 final presented in Bucharest

The design and logo for the 2012 UEFA Europa League final has been unveiled by UEFA at the National Arena Bucharest during a ceremony attended by civic and sporting dignitaries.

UEFA unveiled today the visual identity created for the 2012 UEFA Europa League final at a star-studded event in Bucharest, Romania.

The unveiling ceremony – the first official milestone on the road to the final – was held in the VIP Hospitality Lounge of the National Arena Bucharest, which will stage the showpiece match on 9 May next year. More than 150 guests and 80 media representatives attended the launch, which took place in the presence of the 2012 UEFA Europa League final ambassador Miodrag Belodedici.

Continuing a tradition dating back to the 2006 UEFA Cup final, the 2012 UEFA Europa League final has been given a complete design concept, developed specifically for this high-profile occasion. As such, the new identity carries a distinctive flavour of the host city – the design shows a solitary beam of light flowing through the Bucharest cityscape on the way to its ultimate destination, the stadium. The visuals also contain the intricate structure and detailing of Romanian arts and crafts, which are integrated within the swoosh of light.

As ambassador, Belodedici helped to welcome the UEFA Europa League final to the Romanian capital in the company of the mayor of Bucharest, Sorin Oprescu, the president of the National Sports and Youth Authority, Doina Melinte, the president of the Romanian Football Federation (FRF), Mircea Sandu, and representatives from UEFA. Former Romania defender and two-time European Champion Clubs' Cup winner Belodedici was joined by local sporting personalities, including ex-Romanian internationals, the current technical staff of the national team, and officials past and present from the Romanian football family and other sports.

The design and logo provide the 2012 final with a unique identity which will be applied across a range of applications, with the aim of promoting the final and enhancing the prestige of one of the world's biggest sporting events.

Speaking to the assembled dignitaries, Mircea Sandu and Sorin Oprescu emphasised the prevailing feeling of pride at having this opportunity to host the final and assured those present that every possible effort was being made to ensure that Bucharest would be staging the best possible final in six months' time. Belodedici added that the final would represent a major boost to Romanian children and young players, given such an important occasion could only increase their interest in both the grassroots and the professional game. - http://www.uefa.com

Dortmund defender Bender has jaw operation

Defender Sven Bender has undergone successful surgery after breaking his jaw in two places during Borussia Dortmund's 2-1 loss at Arsenal FC and is unlikely to play again this year.

Borussia Dortmund defender Sven Bender has undergone successful surgery after breaking his jaw in two places during Wednesday's 2-1 UEFA Champions League defeat at Arsenal FC.

The 22-year-old collided with Gunners defender Thomas Vermaelen, fracturing his jaw on both sides, and had to be carried off the pitch on a stretcher. Dortmund coach Jürgen Klopp said: "It will be a while before he will return to team training, but he will be able to start running soon."

The Bundesliga title holders have not said when they expect to have the German international available again, but have stated that he is unlikely to play before January – citing the example of team-mate Mats Hummels who was ruled out for six weeks with a similar injury in February 2010.

Attacking midfielder Mario Götze was also taken off in the first half at Arsenal Stadium, having received a knock above his right knee, but while there is no damage to the joint itself he may be sidelined for Saturday's derby at home to FC Schalke 04.

Dortmund are bottom of Group G yet have a slim chance of progressing to the round of 16 on matchday six when they take on Olympique de Marseille at home, needing a win by a four-goal margin to finish above the French side. Should such a result coincide with an Arsenal victory at Olympiacos, the German champions would claim second place. - http://www.uefa.com

AC Milan vs FC Barcelona News Update 11/24

AC Milan v FC Barcelona: Group leadership and spectacle (3-2) by Roger Bogunyà

Milan (FCB).- A historic meeting between two giants of European football promised thrills, but perhaps not so many. FC Barcelona overcame AC Milan 3-2 in a really attacking, and thrilling, match that was resolved thanks to goals from Van Bommel (o.g.), Messi (pen) and Xavi, which meant that Pep Guardiola’s team were never behind in the game. Mentally, it wasn’t easy for Barça, who saw Ibrahimovic and Boateng equalise twice in a game that, regarding shots on goal, 3 for AC Milan against Barça’s 8, could have ended with a much wider margin in favour of the away team.
So, FC Barcelona come away from the San Siro Stadium with the group leadership mathematically assured, and with BATE Borisov still to visit the Camp Nou, in the week that Barça have to go and play the clásico, against Real Madrid, in the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.

End-to-end match
From the start at the San Siro the fans witnessed a vibrating match. Crazy stuff. Barça went into the game very boldly, starting with a 3-4-3 formation that in attack looked more like 3-3-4 with Cesc and Thiago driving down the middle, and Messi and Villa opening up the wings. The Italians, sitting deep at the back, threatened on the counter-attack, and Prince, Robinho, and Seedorf, always looked for the same player to finish off their good work: Ibrahimovic. No quarter was given, and in the first move of real danger, Barça made it 1-0, when Van Bommel scored an own goal after great ball winning by Thiago, and a Keita cross which Xavi was waiting for.
After the first goal, the match went crazy. Robinho missed a clear chance from three metres, very similar to the chance that Messi missed at the other end, moments later. Before Messi’s chance, however, Milan had already equalised with a goal from former Barcelona player, Ibrahimovic, from a Seedorf pass. The match was not much like Barça usually play, somewhat fragile at the back and repeatedly with numerical superiority at the other end, where each attack created a clear scoring opportunity on Abbiati’s goal, one of the best players in the first half.

Messi regains the lead
In one of Barça’s many chances, Aquilani brought down Xavi, inside the area. Penalty. Aquilani, who had already received a yellow card, escaped being sent off, as the referee showed the yellow card to Nesta. Messi had to score his penalty twice, as the referee deemed that the first time Leo had stopped his forward movement. As if they were the last minutes of the game, Milan poured forward towards Valdes goal in the final stretch of the first half, in which Puyol and Abidal also received yellow cards. At the break, an electric 2-1 lead for Barça at the San Siro.

CSKA Moscow VS Lille OSC 11/23 12BET prediction UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: 11/23 1AM(GMT+8)

CSKA Moscow: Back in 2004, the club received a major financial infusion from a sponsorship deal with Sibneft, an oil company owned by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich. Abramovich did not take an ownership interest in the club, as he was the owner of English Premiership power Chelsea and UEFA rules allow only one club controlled by any one entity (person or corporation) to participate in European club competition in a given season. The partnership with Sibneft lasted until 2006, when VTB became the sponsor of the club. CSKA started 2009 without a shirt sponsor. CSKA won the 2005 UEFA Cup by beating Sporting Clube de Portugal 3–1 in the Final at the Estádio José Alvalade in Lisbon. It became the first Russian club to win a major European title, as well as the first one to complete a treble. In 2013, the club is due to move into a new stadium. On 16 March 2010, CSKA qualified for the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League after defeating Sevilla 3–2 on aggregate.

Lille OSC: In the 2006–07 Ligue 1 season, due to focusing its efforts on four competitions, Lille finished 10th in the league. The club did reached the knockout stage of the Champions League for the first time, but were eliminated by Manchester United via controversial circumstances. In the next season, Lille formed a talented core of players that helped the team to a 7th place finish in the league. Between 2007–2009, Lille sold several of its core players, most notably Michel Bastos, Jean II Makoun, and Kevin Mirallas. The club's success continued into the 2010–11 season when they were crowned Ligue 1 champions for the third time in club history and the first time since 1954. Furthermore, they again finished at the top of the league with 68 goals and striker Moussa Sow was the top individual scorer with 25 goals of his own.

Manchester City warn fans not to wear club colours over fears of knife attacks in Naples

Manchester City have warned supporters travelling to next week’s Champions League game in Naples to avoid wearing their club colours.

Manchester City are fearful of a repeat of the violence which has marred Napoli’s games in Europe in recent years. It has forced them to take the unprecedented step of advising fans not to be seen around the Italian city in scarves and club shirts.About 800 fans have purchased tickets for the game in Italy, but Naples has become one of the most notoriously volatile venues in Europe for visiting supporters.Four Bayern Munich fans were slashed outside the Stadio San Paolo last month, amid several vicious assaults on German supporters by knife-wielding thugs on mopeds.Last season, three Liverpool fans required treatment for knife wounds before a Europa Cup tie. City have liaised with the Anfield club and been fully briefed of the dangers.A club statement released on Thursday informed supporters there had been discussions with Greater Manchester Police, the British consulate in Naples and the Italian police in an effort to maximise security around the game.

Vidic to miss Benfica clash as United opt against two-match UEFA ban appeal

Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic will miss next week's Champions League visit of Benfica after the club decided against a decision to appeal the defender's two-match ban.
Vidic was dismissed in United's 2-0 win over Romanian outfit Otelu Galati last month after a late foul on striker Gabriel Giurgiu.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson thought the red card was 'very harsh' at the time before admitting German referee Wolfgang Stark had a different interpretation of the tackle.
He said: 'I can understand the referee’s interpretation because German football is different to England.'The Serbian has already served part of his suspension, missing the recent return fixture at Old Trafford. His absence could cause United a problem, however, if they pick up any injuries at Swansea this weekend.Chris Smalling is already sidelined leaving Rio Ferdinand, Jonny Evans and Phil Jones as Ferguson's remaining defensive options in a game that would see last season's finalists United secure qualification to the knockout stages should they beat the Portuguese outfit.- http://www.dailymail.co.uk
