Cameroon slash Eto'o ban

Indomitable Lions goal machine has suspension for sparking a strike cut

Samuel Eto'o has had his 15-match ban for leading a player's strike reduced to eight months by the Cameroon Football Federation.

Eto'o - captain of the Indomitable Lions and African Footballer of the Year on four occasions - was handed the original suspension in December after the strike in Morocco last November meant a friendly fixture against Algeria did not go ahead.

Cameroon officials held a meeting on Friday to discuss the suspension of Eto'o, amid speculation that president Paul Biya wanted the length of the ban to be reconsidered.

The 30-year-old - who has smashed 54 goals in 109 games for his country - will miss a 2013 Cup of Nations eliminator versus Guinea Bissau and 2014 World Cup qualifiers against Democratic Republic of Congo and Libya.

The strike was sparked due to the non-payment of match fees and Cameroon were forced to pay 500,000 dollars in compensation for lost television and ticket sales.

Cameroon officials announced the reduction of their striker's ban on Saturday, along with news that vice-captain Enoh Eyong's two-match ban had been halved for his part in the strike and Benoit Assou-Ekotto's fine had been scrapped for ignoring international call-ups.

Eto'o - a UEFA Champions League winner with both Barcelona and Inter Milan - moved to Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala in 2011 and is now reported to be the highest paid footballer in the world. - http://www1.skysports.com
